Absyrtus (died 1246 BC) was a Colchian prince and the brother of Medea.
Biography[]
Absyrtus was the son of King Aeetes and Idyia, and was the brother of Medea and Chalciope. In 1246 BC, Jason and his Argonauts arrived in Colchis and pillaged the locals in search of the Golden Fleece, and Medea persuaded Absyrtus to help her steal the Golden Fleece, which they gave to Jason. The Argonauts then hastily departed from Colchis, with Colchian horsemen in hot pursuit. Medea took Absyrtus with her as they fled with the Argonauts, and, when they were nearly overtaken by their father, Medea murdered Absyrtus, cut his body into pieces, and strewed them onto the road so that her father would be delayed by gathering his son's limbs. Jason and Medea then proceeded to escape and marry.
