Abraham Goebel was a German soldier who served in Hesse-Kassel's Regiment von Lossberg during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, he settled in Canada and became a British subject, integrating himself into the larger Loyalist community that had also fled America. He and several other Hessians, many of whom were conservative by nature, were deeply suspicious of the Whigs due to their association with radical or revolutionary ideals amid the French Revolution.
