Alamin Aboubaker Akhaty Mohamed () was a Tuareg elder and peace mediator from Libya.
Biography[]
Aboubaker Akhaty was born to a family of Muslim Tuaregs in southern Libya, and he became an elder of a tribe of Tuaregs living in Ubari. Akhaty spoke English well, and he appeared in a February 2016 Vice News documentary, "Libya's Secret War: The Tuareg of South Libya", where he discussed the breaching of a 120-year peace between the Tuareg and Tebu tribes in September 2014. The two tribes went to war after the Libyan Revolution of 2011 and the ensuing Second Libyan Civil War caused smuggling routes to be interfered with, and the warfare shattered years of peace (the Tuareg and Tebu refused to fight even when they were on opposite sides of the revolution). He took part in peace talks with the European Institute of Peace, and on 29 July 2015 the Tuareg and Tebu began direct dialogue with each other in Brussels, Belgium.
