Abood Kanbar

Abood Kanbar (born 1945), spelled Abboud Qanbar in Arabic, is a General in the Iraqi Army.

Biography[]

Kanbar was born in Maysan, Iraq, in 1945. Kanbar was a veteran of the Iran-Iraq War and the Gulf War, taking control of the Kuwaiti island of Failaka in 1991 before being captured by the US Marine Corps. He was briefly held in Saudi Arabia before his release. Saddam Hussein gave him an award for his service, but was dismissed for refusing to put down a 1991 Shi'a uprising.

In 2007, President Nouri al-Maliki appointed him as a General of the new Iraqi Army, now allied and trained by the United States. He cracked down on Baghdad terrorists that year, and was one of the generals who fought against the ISIS Offensive in 2014. During the war he changed clothes and abandoned his army, fleeing to Iraqi Kurdistan for safety.
