Abijah Gilbert

Abijah Gilbert (18 June 1806 – 23 November 1881) was a Republican US Senator from Florida from 4 March 1869 to 4 March 1875, succeeding Adonijah Welch and preceding Charles W. Jones.

Biography[]

Abijah Gilbert was born in Gilbertsville, Otsego County, New York in 1806, and he engaged in mercantile pursuits in New York City from 1822 to 1850 before moving to St. Augustine, Florida in 1865 as a "carpetbagger". A former abolitionist Whig, he became active in Republican politics and served in the US Senate from 1869 to 1875, missing 40% of roll call votes. He returned to Gilbertsville after leaving office and died in 1881.
