Abigail Gacy

Abigail Gacy was an African-American bartender who lived in San Francisco, California during the 1870s.

Biography[]

Abigail Gacy was born into slavery in the American South, and, after the American Civil War and emancipation, she emigrated to San Francisco, California. There, she married the brother of opium dealer Happy Jack, only for her husband to be murdered by a gang of angry whites while walking home from a day of working at the docks. Gacy came to run a bar where she and her henchmen drugged and robbed visitors. In 1878, she pulled the same trick on SFPD policeman Richard Lee, giving him a shot of whiskey mixed with laudanum. Lee later returned and beat the two men down, leading Abigail to return hi smoney. Lee later returned after leaving the force, seducing Abigail, who reminded him of his former love back in Georgia. The two formed a relationship, but Happy Jack disapproved of Lee's previous interference with his robbery operation. Abigail later killed Happy Jack after discovering that he had kidnapped her brother and sent him back to his family in Georgia, reuniting with Lee on his return with Wang Chao.
