Abdur Raheem Malak

Abdur Raheem Malak was the Afghan Governor of Helmand Province from 2011 to 2013, preceding Sabri Shaker. Malak was elected on a pro-American platform which supported foreign aid, security (campaigning on a law-and-order platform), intelligence-gathering, and anti-corruption efforts; he defeated the conservative Jaasim Emami and the Islamist Bandar Mousa. In 2013, however, the United States switched its support to Sabri Shaker, who defeated Malak and the Islamist candidate Ali Obeid.
