Abdullahi Issa

Abdullahi Issa (1922-24 March 1988) was the first Prime Minister of Somalia from 29 February 1956 to 1 July 1960, preceding Muhammad Haji Ibrahim Egal.

Biography[]

Abdullahi Issa was born in Afgooye, Italian Somaliland in 1922, and he relocated to Marka at the age of 16. He joined the Somali Youth League after World War II, becoming a businessman and politician. In 1948, he was elected to the SYL Central Committee and eventually became its Secretary-General. In 1956, he was called to head Somalia's first government, becoming Prime Minister. He took part in many international conventions, and, after leaving office in 1960, he continued to serve as an SYL deputy. From 1974 to 1983, he served as Ambassador to Sweden under Siad Barre's dictatorship before retiring to Rome and dying there in 1988.
