Abdullah ibn Umar

Abdullah ibn Umar (610-693) was the second son of the Caliph Umar and the brother-in-law of Muhammad.

Biography[]

Abdullah ibn Umar was born in Mecca in 610, the son of Umar and Zaynab bint Madhun, and his family converted to Islam when he was young. The family emigrated to Medina in 622, and he was one of the stone-throwers in an execution of two adulterers. At the age of sixteen, he fought in the Battle of the Trench, and he also fought at the Battle of al-Muraysi in 628. His father became Caliph in 634, and he went on to participate in battles in Iraq, Persia, and Egypt and remain neutral during the First Fitna. In 661, he pledged allegiance to the Umayyad caliph Muawiyah I after he overthrew the Rashidun Caliphate, and he died in 693.
