Abdullah al-Sallal

Abdullah al-Sallal (9 January 1917-5 March 1994) was President of North Yemen from 1962 to 1967, succeeding Imam Muhammad al-Badr and preceding Abdul Rahman al-Iryani.

Biography[]

Abdullah al-Sallal was born on 9 January 1917 in Sana'a, Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen. al-Sallal led the military coup that overthrew King Muhammad al-Badr and formed North Yemen, a country supported by Egypt's Gamal Abdel Nasser. He fought against Saudi Arabia-backed monarchist rebels in the North Yemen Civil War until 1967, when he was replaced by Abdul Rahman al-Iryani as president. He died in 1994 in Sana'a at the age of 77.
