
Abdullah Sungkar (1937-November 1999) was the founder of Jemaah Islamiyah, a terrorist group in the East Indies.
Biography[]
Abdullah Sungkar was born in 1937 of Hadhrami Arab lineage, with his family coming to Thailand from Yemen. Sungkar became a pirate radio host and an Islamist, and Sungkar founded the terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah on 1 January 1993 alongside Abu Bakar Bashir. Sungkar's group gained influence when he made contact with Saudi Islamist Osama Bin Laden of the Al-Qaeda terrorist group, one of the most influential Muslim terrorist groups on Earth. Sungkar died in 1999 at the age of 62.
