Abdul Razzaq al-Mahdi (1961-) was a Syrian jihadist imam who once served as a religious cleric in Tahrir al-Sham.
Biography[]
Abdul Razzaq al-Mahdi was born in al-Salihiyyah, Damascus, Syria in 1961, and he specialized in hadith sciences and also studied religious works. He preached and taught in Tunisia for a few years before returning to Syria during the Syrian Civil War, intending on supporting the Syrian Opposition against the government. He discouraged terrorist attacks against civilians due to their un-Islamic and counterproductive nature, called for unity under the leadership of Islamic clerics, supported the Turkistan Islamic Party, and worked on the formation of Tahrir al-Sham (which he left on 8 March 2017 due to his opposition to its injustices). Due to his more moderate Salafist views, he was placed on an Islamic State death list.
