Abdul Rahman al-Afari

Abdul Rahman al-Afari (died 9 November 2014), also known as Abu Suja, was a leader of the Islamic State whose job was to give aid to the families of suicide bombers.

Biography[]

Abdul Rahman al-Afari was born in Tal Afar, Iraq to a family of Sunni Muslims, and during the Iraq War, he resisted the US Army and was once detained at Camp Bucca. al-Afari later joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and ran a sponsorship program for the families of suicide bombers, making sure that the families were cared for.

A close aide of Caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi ("Caliph Ibrahim"), al-Afari used the nom de guerre "Abu Suja". He was rarely seen apart from al-Baghdadi, and on 9 November 2014 the USAF targeted a convoy of IS vehicles near Mosul. al-Afari was killed in the airstrike, while al-Baghdadi survived.
