Abdel Hamid al-Sarraj (1925-23 September 2013) was the Prime Minister of Syria from 20 September 1960 to 16 August 1961 under the United Arab Republic, succeeding Nur al-Din Kahala and preceding Maamun al-Kuzbari.
Biography[]
Abdel Hamid al-Sarraj was born in 1925 in Hama, Syria to a family of Sunni Muslim Kurds. al-Sarraj joined the Arab Liberation Army during the First Arab-Israeli War in 1948-1949 and took part in the 1949 coup that overthrew Husni al-Za'im. al-Sarraj was an Arab nationalist who supported Gamal Abdel Nasser, and on 20 September 1960 he was appointed Prime Minister of Syria under the United Arab Republic. al-Sarraj was unpopular, leading Syria as a police state, and he was overthrown in the 1961 Syrian coup d'etat by the nationalist Syrian Ba'ath Party, ending the United Arab Republic. Sarraj went in to exile and died in Cairo, Egypt in 2013.
