Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan

Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan (1960-) was Chairman of the Transitional Military Council of Sudan from 12 April to 20 August 2019 (succeeding Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf) and Chairman of the Sovereignty Council from 21 August 2019.

Biography[]

Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was born in Kundato, Sudan in 1960, and he rose to be General Inspector of the Sudanese Armed Forces. On 12 April 2019, he assumed control of the reigning military junta a day after it ousted President Omar al-Bashirin a military coup, as his predecessor Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf was forced to resign due to his decision to not extradite al-Bashir. His record was cleaner than most of Sudan's generals, and he met with protesters to listen to their demands. In June 2019, starting with the 3 June Khartoum massacre, he used the Janjaweed militias to crack down on peaceful protests, following the Arab world's typical response to dealing with democratic movements. He also presided over a nationwide internet shutdown, but he continued to play a role in his country's transition to democracy as Chairman of the Sovereignty Council from August 2019.
