The Abbasids are an Arabian tribe descended from Abbas ibn Shaiba, the uncle of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Each member of the Abbasid tribe is a sayyid, a descendant of Muhammad, and from 750 to 1258 they ruled the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad in present-day Iraq.
