The A40 is a major, 260-mile trunk road connecting London, England to Fishguard, Wales. The original 1923 route ran from the City of London to Fishguard, but it was rerouted several times. In London, it coincides with Newgate and Edgware Roads, and it then runs from Denham to Oxford, becoming a busy dual carriageway near Oxford. It then becomes a single carriageway from Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire to Cheltenham, passing through Cheltenham's town center. From Cheltenham to Ross-on-Wye, it is again a single carriageway, and it again becomes a dual carriageway in Monmouthshire and continues to Abergavenny. Beyond Abergavenny, it returns to a single carriageway, running to Carmarthen and returning to a dual carriageway. It then crosses the River Tywi twice and continues on to Fishguard.
