The 9th Vermont Infantry Regiment was a Union Army regiment from Vermont which was active from 9 July 1862 to April 1865 during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized at Brattleboro in southern Vermont, and it was one of many green regiments freshly raised prior to the Maryland Campaign. The regiment was sent to garrison Harpers Ferry, defending Bolivar Heights against Confederate incursion. The entire regiment of 747 men was captured despite Colonel George J. Stannard's efforts to escape, but the regiment was paroled in 1863 and went on to take part in the capture of Richmond, Virginia at the end of the war. During the war, the regiment lost 298 men dead, including 23 killed in action, 36 dead in captivity, and 232 dead from disease.
