The 9th New York Infantry Regiment, also known as Hawkins' Zouaves, was a Union Army regiment from New York which was active from 4 May 1861 to 20 May 1863 during the American Civil War. The regiment was raised in New York City by Rush Hawkins after the Governor gave him permission to raise a regiment of zouaves, and the number of recruits quickly outgrew the size of the recruiting office, attracting 2,000 men. The regiment first fought in Benjamin Butler's North Carolina campaign in early 1862 before being attached to the Army of the Potomac and fighting at the Battle of Antietam and the Battle of Fredericksburg in Virginia. While being mustered out in New York, the regiment was dispatched to quell the infamous New York draft riots in 1863, and it was then merged into the 17th New York Veteran Infantry Regiment.
