71st (Highland) Regiment of Foot

The 71st (Highland) Regiment of Foot was a Highlander infantry regiment of the British Army which was active from 1777 to 1881. The regiment was raised at Elgin, Moray, Scotland from Highland clans, and it was first deployed to India during the 1780s; another battalion participated in the Great Siege of Gibraltar. The regiment transferred to Ceylon in 1795 and to Scotland in 1798, and the regiment took part in the capture of the Cape Colony in 1806, in the Peninsular War in Spain, in the Crimean War, the 1857 Sepoy Rebellion, and the 1863 Ambela campaign. The regiment was merged into the Highland Light Infantry in 1881.
