The 6th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was a Union Army regiment from Wisconsin which was active from 16 July 1861 to 2 July 1865 during the American Civil War. The regiment was raised in Madison in 1861, and it first saw action during the Northern Virginia campaign of 1862 before suffering considerable losses at the Battle of Antietam on 17 September 1862. The 6th later distinguished itself at the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, taking 200 Confederate soldiers from Mississippi as prisoners. The regiment would later fight in the Overland Campaign and the Siege of Petersburg, and it was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky in July 1865. The regiment, which was composed of 1,630 troops throughout the war, lost 357 men during the war.
