The 5th Texas Infantry Regiment was a Texan regiment of the Confederate States Army that was active from 30 September 1861 to 9 April 1865 during the American Civil War; it was the largest unit of the Texas Brigade. Raised in Colorado, Harris, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Milam, Montgomery, Polk, Trinity, Walker, and Washington Counties in East Texas, the regiment first fought at the Battle of Eltham's Landing before joining the Army of Northern Virginia in all of its major battles from the Battle of Seven Pines to the Battle of Appomattox in 1865, with the exception of brief service in the West at the Battle of Chickamauga and Siege of Knoxville in 1863. The regiment lost half its number at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 and again at the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864.
