The 5th Panzer Army was an armored formation of the German Wehrmacht, existing from 8 December 1942 to 30 June 1943 and from 24 January 1944 to 17 April 1945. The army was commanded by Hans-Jurgen von Arnim in North Africa, but its commander Gustav von Varest was forced to surrender to the Allied Powers on 13 May 1943 after the army was pushed back to Cap Bon in northern Tunisia. In 1944, the army was reformed and saw action under the command of Heinrich Eberbach in the Normandy campaign and then under Hasso von Manteuffel during the Battle of the Bulge. On 17 April 1945, the army was forced to surrender to the US Army in the Ruhr Pocket of Germany.
