58th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment

The 58th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, also known as the Polish Legion, was a US Army infantry regiment that was active from 27 August 1861 to 1 October 1865 during the American Civil War. The regiment was raised by Wlodzimierz Krzyzanowski, and it was composed almost entirely of immigrants from Poland, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Russia, and France, being raised in the diverse New York City. The regiment served in the Army of the Potomac in Virginia, and Krzyzanowski and his regiment bravely defended Cemetery Hill from the Confederate States Army at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. In September 1863, the regiment was transferred to the Western Theater, and it fought at Wauhatchie and Chattanooga. At the conclusion of the war, the regiment was sent to Nashville, Tennessee, where it was paid and discharged on 1 October 1865.
