The 56th Virginia Infantry Regiment was a Virginian infantry regiment of the Confederate States Army that was active from September 1861 to April 1865 during the American Civil War. Raised in Louisa, Mecklenburg, Buckingham, Nelson, and Charlotte counties, the regiment was captured at the Battle of Fort Donelson before being paroled and transferred east. The regiment was attached to the Army of Northern Virginia from the Peninsula Campaign to the Appomattox campaign, with the exception of the Siege of Suffolk.
