The 51st New York Volunteer Infantry was a Union Army infantry regiment which was active from 27 July 1861 to 25 July 1865. It was organized at New York City, New York and commanded by Colonel Edward Ferrero, and it first fought at the Battle of New Bern in North Carolina in 1862; it later fought at the Second Battle of Bull Run and served in northern Virginia until April 1863; it fought at the Battle of Antietam and the Battle of Fredericksburg before being transferred to the Army of the Ohio, fighting at the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863. It went on to take part in the Overland Campaign of 1864, ending the war at Appomattox in 1865. During the war, the 51st New York lost 9 officers and 193 enlisted men in combat and 2 officers and 174 enlisted men from disease.
