Richmond Zouaves

The 44th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, also known as the Richmond Zouaves, was a regiment of the Confederate States Army that was active from June 1861 to April 1865 during the American Civil War. The regiment consisted of men from Richmond, Farmville, Appomattox, Buckingham, Louisa, Goochland, Amelia, Fluvanna, and Hanover, and the regiment fought in Robert E. Lee's 1861 West Virginia campaign, Stonewall Jackson's 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the major battles in northern Virginia; the regiment suffered heavy losses, and only one officer and twelve men surrendered in April 1865.
