The 3rd Marine Division is a division of the US Marine Corps, active from 1942 to 1945 and since 1952. Activated at San Diego, California during World War II, the division fought at Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima during the Pacific War, after which it was deployed to Okinawa to support the Korean War effort. During the Vietnam War, the division operated out of Da Nang, conducting operations around the Vietnamese DMZ. The division suffered 6,869 killed in action during the war, evacuating South Vietnam in November 1969. Units from the division went on to fight in the Gulf War, the Afghanistan War, and the Iraq War, and it continues to be stationed on Okinawa.
