The 36th Ohio Infantry Regiment was a Union Army regiment which was active from 30 July 1862 to 27 July 1865 during the American Civil War. The 36th Ohio consisted of men hailing from southeastern Ohio, and its soldiers assembled themselves at Marietta. The regiment took part in several raids and played an integral role in winning the Battle of Lewisburg in West Virginia in August 1862 before moving to the defenses of Washington DC. The 36th Ohio was then attached to the Army of the Potomac, fighting against the Confederates at the Battle of South Mountain and the Battle of Antietam before being detached to the Western Theater. A majority voted to re-enlist whne their enlistment term expired in January 1864, giving them the title of "veteran volunteer infantry". The regiment fought in the Chattanooga campaign and in the Valley Campaigns of 1864 before ending the war at Wheeling, West Virginia and mustering out in July 1865.
