35th Guards Air Assault Brigade

The 35th Guards Air Assault Brigade is an airmobile brigade of the Kazakhstani military, formerly of the Soviet Army. The brigade was formed in Ryazan on 1 October 1948 before being dispatched to the Turkestan Military District in 1960, the Central Asian Military District in 1969, to Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan War, and afterwards to Cottbus in East Germany. In April 1991, the division was withdrawn to Kapchagay in the Kazakh SSR, and the dissolution of the Soviet Union resulted in the takeover of the division by Kazakh authorities on 13 May 1992. From 1992 to 1994, the division fought in the Tajik Civil War, but the outflow of Russian personnel and funding shortages led to the brigade's size being reduced to 1,500 soldiers in the summer of 1995.
