The 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was a Union Army infantry regiment from Wisconsin which was active from 11 June 1861 to 2 July 1864 during the American Civil War. The regiment was raised from Madison, Racine, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, and La Crosse, and the prominent Milwaukee County Democrat S. Park Coon was named the regiment's colonel. The regiment was attached to the Iron Brigade of the Army of the Potomac during the war, first fighting at the First Battle of Bull Run and suffering heavy losses at the Second Battle of Bull Run, during which its colonel Edgar O'Connor was killed in action. The regiment again suffered heavy casualties at the Battle of Antietam, lost 77% of its strength at the Battle of Gettysburg, and ended the war with the costly 1864 Overland Campaign, after which the regiment was mustered out. It suffered the largest percentage of casualties of any Union military unit during the entire war.
