The 26th of July Movement was a revolutionary guerrilla organization in Cuba that was founded by Fidel Castro, Raul Castro, Che Guevara, and other revolutionaries in 1955 while they were exiled in Mexico. The movement was named after the 26 July 1953 attack on the Moncado Barracks in a failed coup against Fulgencio Batista, and on 2 December 1956 it returned to Cuba, beginning the Cuban Revolution. On 1 January 1959, the 26th of July Movement entered the capital of Havana after winning several victories against Batista's army, and the Cuban Revolution ended in a victory for the communist rebels. In 1965, it became the Communist Party of Cuba, the ruling political party of the country, and the 26th of July Movement's flag is both a symbol of the Cuban Revolution and a patch that is still worn by Cuban Army personnel.
