The 2018 Hermosillo shootout occurred in Sonora in 2018 during the Mexican Drug War. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel attacked Sonora, the last Mexican Federal Police-occupied state in the country, facing just 10 policemen with their 230 gunmen from Chihuahua. The ensuing shootout in the vital border city of Hermosillo left 80 Jaliscan gunmen and all 10 policemen dead. Jalisco's capture of Sonora eliminated the police's ability to launch new offensives against the cartels, as the CJNG was in near-complete control of the country, bar the Baja California peninsula and the state of Quintana Roo.
