The 2017 Tampico shootout occurred in 2017 during the Mexican Drug War. At the start of 2017, the Gulf Cartel recaptured Tamaulipas from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which had been seeking to expand northwards to gain access to cross-border smuggling routes into the United States. In response to the Gulf's counterattack, the CJNG sent 130 gunmen from San Luis Potosi to recapture Tamaulipas, resulting in a gun battle with 50 Gulf gunmen in Tampico. The ensuing battle left 40 CJNG gunmen and all 50 Gulf gunmen dead, and the CJNG regained control of the plaza and also seized $350,000.
