The 2017 Monterrey shootout occurred in 2017 during the Mexican Drug War, when the Jalisco New Generation Cartel attacked and conquered the state of Nuevo Leon from the Gulf Cartel. Following its recapture of Tamaulipas at the 2017 Tampico shootout, the CJNG moved swiftly to finish off the remnants of the Gulf in Nuevo Leon. A force of 90 CJNG gunmen was trucked into Nuevo Leon to take over the plaza from the Gulf, which had 50 gunmen stationed in Monterrey to protect the state. The ensuing shootout resulted in the deaths of 40 Jalisco gunmen and all 50 Gulf gunmen, and the CJNG seized $330,000 during the raid.
