The 2016 Rioverde shootout occurred in 2016 during the Mexican Drug War. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, aiming to finish off the Beltran Leyva Cartel and avenge its losses at the 2016 Cerritos shootout, attacked the Beltran Leyva stronghold of San Luis Potosi, trucking in 40 sicarios from Hidalgo. These Jalisco gunmen engaged in a shootout with 20 Beltran Leyva hitmen in the town of Rioverde, and, in the ensuing shootout, 20 Jalisco gunmen and all 20 Beltran Leyva gunmen were killed. The CJNG went on to occupy the state and seize $350,000 in cash, defeating their rivals.
