2016 Manhattan bombing

The 2016 Manhattan bombing occurred at 8:30 PM on 17 September 2016 when a pipe bomb exploded on West 23rd Street in Chelsea, Manhattan, New York City. The bomb exploded in a crowded area, injuring 29 people. The attack shattered windows of a five-story brownstone building, and the explosion disrupted travel in Manhattan as security was ramped up. New York mayor Bill De Blasio stated that there were no indications that the attack was caused by a foreign terrorist group, and it did not bear the hallmarks of an Islamic State attack. The NYPD used a robot to defuse another bomb four blocks away, preventing another explosion. The next day, the NYPD investigated a Tumblr post claiming that the attack was in response to the persecution of LGBT people, but Ahmad Khan Rahami was later identified as the suspect.
