The 2016 Hamburg knife attack occurred on 16 October 2016 when an Islamic State sympathizer from North Africa attacked a young couple with a knife on the banks of the Alster River in Hamburg, Germany. A 16-year-old boy was killed, while his 15-year-old female companion escaped. On 29 October 2016, the Islamic State claimed that one of its "soldiers" had carried out the attack in response to calls by IS to target civilians in the West.
