The 2015 Los Mochis shootout occurred in 2015, amid the Mexican Drug War. The leader of the remnants of the Beltran-Leyva Cartel, Fausto Isidro Meza Flores, decided to take advantage of the infighting between the Sinaloa Cartel bosses Damaso Lopez and Ivan Archivaldo Guzman to retake Los Mochis for good. He had his hitman "Bernie" gather men and arms at Mochicahui, 12.5 miles northeast of Los Mochis, before preparing his own hit squad in Guasave to the southeast of the city. When both men were ready, they launched a two-pronged assault on the town, seizing the turf and forcing the imprisoned El Chapo's lieutenant Carlos Manuel Hoo Ramirez to relocate to a new safehouse. The shootout was a setback for El Chapo, who was forced to change his plans for where he would escape to.
