JW Marriott bombing

The damage done by the bombing

The 2003 Marriott Hotel bombing occurred at 11:58 AM on 5 August 2003 when Jemaah Islamiyah suicide bomber Asmar Latin Sani detonated a car bomb in a Toyota Kijang pickup truck at the taxi stand in front of the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia. The vehicle blew up at the taxi stand (not at the lobby as planned), killing 12 people and injuring 150, with all but one of the victims being Indonesians (one was Dutch). The hotel had been viewed as a symbol of Western influence on Indonesia, and it was once a venue for US embassy staff to stay at. On 8 September 2003, the hotel reopened after five weeks of repairs.
