The site of one of the bombings
The 2002 Bali bombings occurred on 12 October 2002 when Jemaah Islamiyah set off three bombs in the Kuta tourist district on the island of Bali, Indonesia. A suicide bomber carried a backpack bomb to a nightclub in Kuta, while a car bomb was detonated next to another club; a third bomb exploded outside of the United States embassy in Denpasar. Osama bin Laden left behind a cassette-recorded audio message claiming that the attacks were in response to Australia's role in the liberation of East Timor from the Muslim Indonesian government and due to their alliance with the USA. The bombings killed 202 people and wounded 209, and Imam Samudra, Amrozi, and Mukhlas were executed by firing squad at Nusakambangan for planning the attacks; on 9 March 2010, Dulmatin - who had detonated one of the bombs via cell phone - was killed by Detachment 88 in Jakarta.
