The 1st California Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the United States that served in the Western Theater of the American Civil War.

James H. Carleton was appointed as the Colonel of the regiment, which was formed to fight for the Department of New Mexico. They fought against the Confederate States Army's Army of New Mexico in the 1862 New Mexico Campaign, engaging in the Battle of Picacho Pass, the westernmost engagement of the war. When the Union reached eastern New Mexico, the Confederates retreated into Texas and the Californians fought the Apache and Navajo in the Plains Indian Wars in the Utah Territory unti October 21, 1866, having served on garrison duty for most of the years 1862-1865.
