- New World Order begins a month after the end of the Soviet Union. 1992 sees the Soviet Union break up into Russia, Finland, Belarus, Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Chechnya (temporarily), Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Yugoslavia breaks up as its states go separate ways due to ethnic rivalries. The European Union is founded. George H.W. Bush declares that the Cold War is over.
- Command economy in Russia ends under President Boris Yeltsin when he makes goods 3-5 times more expensive by ending price controls.
- Bosnia-Herzegovina declares independence from Serbia and Montenegro, and then Slovenia and Croatia. The Yugoslav Wars begin.
- The Salvadoran Civil War ends.
- Nagorno-Karabakh War begins.
- Algerian Civil War begins.
- Soviet-Afghan War's final stage ends, Afghan Civil War begins.
- Los Angeles Riots in the United States.
- Crimea declares their separation from Ukraine on 5 May 1992, but five days later they rejoin Ukraine.
- Peru arrests officers who try to kill President Alberto Fujimori.
- Somali Civil War begins.
- CDs outsell cassettes for the first time in the USA.
