A JRA guerrilla with the hostages
The 1974 French Embassy attack in The Hague occurred on 13 September 1974 when three members of the Japanese Red Army (Haruo Wako, Jun Nishikawa, and Junzo Okudaira) stormed the French embassy in The Hague, Netherlands and took the ambassador and ten other people hostage. The JRA commando demanded the release of detained JRA member Yatsuka Furuya, $1,000,000, and a French airplane, and they injured two policemen when they attempted to rescue the hostages. The Dutch government decided to negotiate with the hostage-takers rather than put the hostages' lives in jeopardy, and the attackers were given $300,000, Furuya was released, and they were flown to Aden, South Yemen. The South Yemeni government rejected them, and they proceeded to fly to Syria, whose government forced them to give up their ransom, as they did not see ransoms as revolutionary methods.
