Aldershot bombing

The damage from the bombing

The 1972 Aldershot bombing was an Official IRA terrorist attack that occurred on 22 February 1972 when the IRA used a car bomb to attack the headquarters of the British 16th Parachute Brigade in Aldershot, Hampshire, England. A Ford Cortina family car carrying a 280-lb time bomb was left in a nearby car park, and the bomb exploded at 12:40 PM, destroying the officers' mess hall and wrecking several nearby British Army buildings. 7 people, all civilians (including one priest), were killed in the bombing, while 18 were wounded. The attack was claimed as a revenge attack for Bloody Sunday on 30 January 1972, and the bombing was condemned due to all of its victims being civilians.
