The 1971 Scottish soldiers' killings occurred on 10 March 1971 when the Provisional IRA murdered three intoxicated Scottish British Army soldiers in Belfast, Northern Ireland at the start of The Troubles. Brothers John and Joseph McCaig and Dougald McCaughey, off-duty soldiers, drank at Mooney's bar in central Belfast before heading to a roadside to relieve themselves. There, they were ambushed by IRA guerrillas and murdered, and the 17-year-old John McCaig's death led to the United Kingdom raising the age for service in Northern Ireland to the age of 18.
