The 1961 Syrian coup d'etat was an uprising by Syrian Army officers on 28 September 1961 that resulted in the Republic of Syria becoming independent from the United Arab Republic union with Egypt. The Syrian Ba'ath Party, led by Hafez al-Assad, Salah Jadid, and Muhammad Umran overthrew the de facto Syrian leader Abdel Hamid al-Sarraj and seceded from the UAR, and the government of Syria would be taken over by the Ba'athists.
