- On 23 February 1836, the Battle of the Alamo begins when 184 Texian Army troops are besieged inside of the Alamo fortress in San Antonio, Texas by the Mexican Army during the Texas Revolution. On 6 March, the siege ends after all of the defenders are killed.
- On 2 March 1836, the Republic of Texas declares its independence from Mexico.
- On 21 April, the Texans defeat the Mexicans at the Battle of San Jacinto, and Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna is captured the next day and forced to grant Texas its independence. On 5 September, Sam Houston is elected its first president.
- On 11 September, the Riograndense Republic is proclaimed in southern Brazil.
- On 7 December, US Democratic Party presidential candidate Martin Van Buren defeats American Whig Party candidate William Henry Harrison to become the next President of the United States.
- On 28 December, Spain recognizes the independence of Mexico.
