The 17th South Carolina Infantry Regiment was a Confederate States Army regiment from South Carolina which was active from early 1862 to April 1865 during the American Civil War. It was raised in Barnwell, York, Chester, Lancaster, and Fairfield Counties, and it was attached to the Army of Northern Virginia and first fought at the Second Battle of Bull Run. After the Battle of Antietam, the regiment was sent south to fight in Kinston, Mississippi and at the Battle of Jackson, and it garrisoned Fort Sumter before returning to Virginia in the spring of 1864. During the Battle of the Crater, the regiment lost 135 men to the massive mine blast alone. The regiment ended the war at Appomattox, when it surrendered with 9 officers and 110 men.
