The 13 Martyrs of Arad were thirteen generals of Hungary that were executed by the Austrian Empire after the quelling of the Hungarian War of Independence. General Julius Jacob von Haynau had the generals killed by firing squad in an act of brutality, and the day of the execution, 6 October 1849, is revered as a day of mourning in Hungary.
